Closing in on Glass City

First off, sorry for taking so long to get going on my blog!  I’ve been super busy with several different projects and one thing in particular is very important to me.  More on that at a later date!  (I know…that’s kind of rotten to tease.)

mike-off-to-raceThere have been several races of late that I just wanted to share a little about.  Recently, Karla and I went to North Carolina to run The Asheville Half Marathon on the grounds of the Biltmore!  Can I just tell you that this race was everything they billed it to be!  The course was not only super challenging but absolutely beautiful!  Rolling hills (and I do mean hills!), both paved roads and gravel, spectacular views of the estate and the mountains…it had everything!

mike_ashville_blingKarla has had an injury that just now is starting to allow her to run on a more regular basis.  She took the place of my sister Patti in North Carolina and did very well!  She cussed at me for being too motivational at about mile 10 or so, but other than that…all went well!  I highly recommend putting this race on your “must do” list!  Well organized, great swag bag and some super sponsors!

mike_great_black_swampThis past weekend was the Great Black Swamp Festival of Races!  I decided to run the 15K this year as I may have been a little bored on the 25K last year…lol!  The 15K is a wonderful distance for me as it’s what I train as my long runs.  I felt great during the race and stayed at the pace I set out to run.  I’m on target for what I’d like to run for the Glass City Half Marathon on April 24th!  I’d like to better my time at Glass City this year and that means cutting below the 1:50 time.  It will be a challenge and I’m sure it will hurt a bit but I feel the need to do this.  It’s just for me…my own little mental game I like to play.

mike-coworkersThe Black Swamp brought out friends, family and co-workers!  Several of the ladies I work with decided to walk the 5K and did a wonderful job!  Very proud of all of them for committing to it and then getting it done!  Nice work and I hope to see all of you at another race or two this year!  My major supporter…Antie N was there!  She shows at almost every race we run here in the Toledo area.  She keeps me motivated and does regular donations to Mobile Meals!  She always has a great hug and a warm smile and that means the world to me!

The Black Swamp is special to me because they have the last mile (the memory mile) covered with signs of the names of so many people we runners/walkers have lost over the years.  It’s our way of remembering them and showing how special they were to our lives.  Both my parents names were on the mile and it’s always bitter sweet to see the signs.  This too should be a “must do” race!

As I said above…the Glass City Half Marathon is April 24th!  I’d so love to have people come out and support all the fine runners and walkers!  It’s the largest event in Toledo during the year for running and the more people that show, the more other runners will talk about the race and come from all over to run here!  Did I mention this is the 40th Anniversary of the Glass City Marathon??  Yup…just another reason to come out and support the event!  The other thing I’d like to see is a push in donations for Mobile Meals of Toledo!  If you’ve ever wanted to donate or if you’d like to help out again…please…before, during or after the Glass City would be so appreciated!  It shows how much we care for this organization that continues to do great things for those in need in “our” community!  You can just go on my web page runzombierun.net and click on the donation button!  There’s a spot in there for any kind of message you’d like to leave as well.  If you want to donate in honor of someone or you want to just see me crush this Half Marathon…put it in there!  I do get to see a copy of your message via email and love some of the things people post. 🙂  All monies go directly to Mobile Meals of Toledo!  I get nothing more than the satisfaction of making a difference.  I want to do well for this race and I want to do even better for the organization that I’ve taken great pride in helping all of last year and again this year!

More races coming!  Before the Glass City I’m traveling back to Ann Arbor to run the Half Marathon there!  It starts right next to the “Big House”!  It’s a great course and last year caught me off guard.  I actually had to walk for a short section on a hill.  If you know me…you know that I absolutely hate walking on hills and demand more from myself!  So this year…I’m crushing that hill!!  Silly??  Maybe…but it’s who I am!

Stay tuned for more episodes!  I’ll get back on here after I handle the Ann Arbor Half Marathon and give you all a report.  Remember to help me with Mobile Meals of Toledo and also to get out there and move!  The body was meant to be in motion…not on a couch or in a chair!  Thanks again for all the support and I’ll see you on the Road!

2016 and the new Challenges!

Well, I have to be honest.  I was so focused and had gotten used to running anywhere and everywhere last year that when I hit the 30th race, I was faced with the question…”What will I do now?”  The reply that followed in my head…”Get back out there because people still need you!”

That’s right…I’ve teamed up with Mobile Meals of Toledo again for 2016!  While I won’t be doing 30 races, I will be doing some very special runs and a few are what I’d like to call “Bucket List” runs!  The first on my must do races will be in Asheville North Carolina!  Karla and I will be traveling to The Biltmore and running on the absolutely beautiful grounds of this still private home!  If you’ve never been there…it’s a must see!  This will be the very first Half Marathon on the grounds!!  They’ve run Full Marathons there but never a Half.  Being a part of something so big and beautiful makes it extra special!  I will be wearing my New Colors!  The Blue Run Zombie Run shirts are done and I’ll be scooping them tomorrow!  White lettering on these awesome blue shirts and the Zombie will be Pink!  Anyone that’s been following knows that I have a special spot in my heart for the many Pink Warriors out there that have been fighting cancer or have lost the battle.  I feel it’s my place to honor them with the color and carry them along on each and every run!

The other thing I’ve decided to do was run 1,000 miles for 2016!  Just another challenge to keep my body going and my head in the game!  I’ll snatch a nice shirt when I reach the miles and some cool bling!  Always fun!

(It's true.)

(It’s true.)

The highlights this year…well…The Glass City Marathon and Half Marathon will be celebrating it’s 40th Anniversary!  I absolutely had to sign up for this one!  It’s my home town and the streets of Toledo call to me! So look out for this race on April 24, 2016!!

The race I’m the most excited about for 2016…Ragnar Chicago!!!  I’m teaming up with a group of runners from all different areas, working from two vans and running some 200 miles from Wisconsin farm country all the way to Chicago big city lights!!  It’s a non stop run and each runner hops in and out of the van based on a schedule and runs!  I have a 6 mile hop, then later on a 4 mile and finish with yet another 6 mile run!  I’m told it’s one of the greatest runs you’ll ever do so I’m totally stoked for this!  I’ll be spending time with amazing, friendly and super fun people during this time and look forward to strengthening our running bond!  Wow…just Wow!!  So ready!!

I’m part of a couple great groups of people (The Toledo Road Runners) as well as an Ambassador of (The RunJunKEes)!  Both are full of wonderful, supportive, hardworking people!  They help to keep me moving even when I may not feel like doing so.  I highly recommend jumping into a group like these for support and motivation!  Both of these groups are super with giving back and/or paying it forward!  Something very important to my soul.

I will be asking for help along the way to further help Mobile Meals of Toledo!  If you want to do a one time donation or per race or hell…even for my miles!  I’d be so grateful for any help and I know that Mobile Meals would love it as well.  They work hard to keep seniors in their home, remaining independent and eating healthy meals!  These people love the workers and volunteers that deliver to them.  For some it may be the only person that comes to see them during the day.  Donations can be made on my website at runzombierun.net.  All monies go directly to Mobile Meals…I receive absolutely nothing but the satisfaction of knowing that we’re making a difference and taking care of others!

I promise to get on and blog on a more regular basis again!  I took a little break to get my life back into order…lol!  Never seems to be enough time in a day!  I’ll keep pushing and racing to make the world a better place!  Send any positive mojo my direction for a healthy 2016!  Maybe a little extra for a P.R. at the Glass City!  Keep moving, walking, running, biking, whatever it takes…get it done!  I’ll see you on the road!

Wrap up of the 30 and a New Awakening

P1020771Well we made it!  All 30 races are in the books!  What a ride it has been!  I set all new records for myself during the last few half marathons and had the time of my life getting there!

So many people that have helped me through this and stood by my side.  So many of you have followed, cheered and even been inspired!  I can’t thank you enough.  The donations to a wonderful group (Mobile Meals of Toledo) have been just WOW!!  When I took this challenge on, I never thought that it would touch so many and make such a difference.  Truly humbling.

The Run Zombie Run Virtual 5K (Revenge of the Silva) was a blast to get together and it never would have happened if…Tom Silva would not have made such a big deal about my first race…lmao!!  Thanks Tom!  He’s the reason for the Revenge of the Silva part of the race name.  Most importantly though…Mathews Ford of Oregon stepped up and paid for all of the shirts that were sent out to your wonderful people!!  That’s no small nut!  They covered the cost of the shirts and printing and were happy to do so!  Please take a moment to thank them!  Whether it be by phone, email, or even stop in and say thanks!  Do some business with them if you’re in need!  Great people there!

The artwork for the shirt was donated by an amazing artist (Sailor Woody…Robert).  He’s located at Infinite Art Tattoo Studio here in the Toledo area.  “Real Good Tattoos”  Those are his words…lol!  Great guy!  See you soon Woody!

Jupmode!  The place to go to get shirts done!  They’ve handled all of my race shirts through the entire year and also printed up the 5K Zombie shirts!  They’re on the web, Facebook, Instagram…you name it!  Do some business with them!

My family, friends, co-workers…what can I say…you’ve seen me through everything!  Being tired, sore, battle scarred, pretty much everything!  Nothing but positive things came from all of you…and I thank you for that!  It means the world to me to know that I’m loved and supported.

So where do we go from here?!  That was the first thing that popped into my head when I made it across the finish line of the 30th race!  Forward for sure!  I have plans to do bucket list type races in 2016!  Some destination runs, some of my favorite local runs and one big relay race with 11 of the craziest runners ever!!  I’ve committed to Mobile Meals of Toledo for 2016!  They still need help from the Zombie and I’m down with that!  I’m already thinking of what color the race shirt will be for this next year and what other crazy things I can get into!

I’ll be putting a challenge out there for everyone in 2016.  I’m going to get my gym mojo back along with my running.  I want to PR for a Half Marathon and have my sites set on 1:45 for a time!  That would be a huge step and I think with some strength training and good luck, it can be done.  I’m planning on running the Glass City Half Marathon in April!  This will be the 40th Anniversary for this event so it’s a must do!  I’d love to see my fellow Zombies get involved with this in some fashion.  They offer a 5K as well so don’t be shy!  If you don’t have an interest in that, come out and offer to volunteer!  They can always use people to work on the route, help keep things organized or even clean up after the event.  So lets make that part of the 2016 challenge.  I also want everyone to remember what I always say…we only get one go around, so make it count!  Look at 2016 as a new beginning!  Ask yourself what you want out of life and how you can make things better.  Take the time for your health!  Get out and move!  Join a gym, eat better, walk more, run if you can but do something!  The human body was meant to be in motion and it’s just begging you to move…so let’s go!  Let’s run into the new year with bright eyes and a new awakening!  Stay with me on this!  Stay with me and I promise you there will be improvements!  I’ll keep my Run Zombie Run Website going, my Facebook page and this…30races.com.  Stay tuned and I’ll see you…on the Road!”  ~Zombie~

The Final Four!

I’m so excited to say it…The Final Four Races!!  Early on in this adventure I thought I’d fail for sure.  The injury bug came to visit early and often during the first couple months.  With some good workouts, a great massage therapist (Becky at Massage Works) and of course Dr. Odeh at Genoa Medical I’ve made it this far!

The Final Four are as follows:

10/11/15 http://runtoledo.com/macqueens-run-for-your-life-10k-5k/ The MacQueen’s Run for your life will be tomorrow morning in Holland, Ohio!  Run begins at 9 a.m.

10/17/15 http://www.davesraces.com/ The Trick or Trot 5K and Zombie Walk!  This one starts at 9 a.m. also and will be at Fallen Timbers Mall.

11/8/5 http://www.monroehalfmarathon.com/  The Monroe Half Marathon!  My favorite running distance and just a stone throw from the Toledo area.

11/14/15  The Big Race #30!!  http://www.davesraces.com/  The 48th Annual Churchill’s Half Marathon!  One of the oldest races in the area and of course…13.1 Miles of Awesome!  I felt that the last race had to be a good one and I wanted to stay local for the finish!  This race has always been a challenge.  It will start at Perrysburg High School at 9 a.m. and finish at Fallen Timbers shopping Mall!  I invite anyone and everyone to come on out!  I would love to see Zombies all over the course with smiles, cheers and maybe a cow bell or two!  I do run faster with the sound of a cow bell…just sayin!

Please feel free to go back through some of my blogs throughout the year.  I’ve done this a few times to reflect!  I’ve also gone through my Facebook page Run Zombie Run.  So many pictures of the things I’ve seen and the places I’ve traveled through the year!  All of the amazing support I’ve received!!  I can never thank my friends, family and co-workers enough!  All the funds that have been raised for Mobile Meals of Toledo!  I’ll get together a grand total at the end of the year along with some fun stats on how many miles I’ve covered racing, how many miles (approximately) I’ve run in training and some of the challenges that I’ve faced through the year.

The past couple of races have been fantastic!  The Smoky Mountain’s Half Marathon in mid September was very hilly and beautiful!  My sister Patti and Karla both ran this one and had a blast!  I posted a much better time this year on the course at 1:58:30.  I was super thrilled with it due to the hills and humidity!  Mid 60’s and 95% humidity!  I was soaked all the way through by the finish line!

The next Half marathon was in upper Michigan.  The Sleeping Bear Dunes Half!  Outstanding course!  Seriously!  If you ever get the chance to run this race or just go and visit the area…do it!  Cool temperatures with a touch of wind at the start of this race.  My sister and I both felt really good and kept a positive attitude the whole way through!  It paid off!  1:51:47 was my time and a new PR!  With the conditions and the hills in the race…I was just floored!  My sister broke into tears after coming across the finish at 1:51:51!  Not only was it a huge jump in time for her but she scored 3rd place in her age group!  So proud!

So here we go!  The Final Four!  The Big push to reach the Finish!!  I need all the help I can get to make this!  The time for Zombies is now!

I’ll see YOU…on the road!

Loss and the road ahead

Robert W. "Bob" Neeley, December 1, 1936 - August 6, 2015

Robert W. “Bob” Neeley, December 1, 1936 – August 6, 2015

On August 6, 2015 my Father, Robert W. Neeley passed away.  A strong-willed and passionate man passed these very same traits onto his children.  The words “I can’t do it” were not allowed in our home.  While we didn’t always see eye to eye over the years, I admired his drive and wanted so much to be noticed by him.  During the last weeks he was alive, I was able to have some good conversations with him and found that he was a fan of the Run Zombie Run campaign.  He asked how I was feeling and was I looking forward to getting all 30 races completed.  I told him of the many obstacles I had faced over the past months: the hamstring, the groin and several different foot issues.  He kind of chuckled and said…”You’ll be fine and you’ll finish this because you’re my son.”  That was an amazing moment for me!  My Father was never very good at telling you how proud he was of you.  He had no problem telling others all about your accomplishments, but to say them to you…very rare.  I was kind of choked up and said, “Wow!”  He chuckled again and told me to just keep running and he’d be proud to see me finish the 30 races.

Well, he decided to leave before the big party for the 30 races.  I’ll be at #24 next weekend.  He may not be here to share in the festivities then, but he’s with me now as I run every mile!  I’ve been challenged to run 100 miles during the month of August by my good friend Brian “Monk” Taylor.  I decided to take on that challenge and dedicate the miles to my father – the man who has given me the strength to always push, never quit and to be the very best!  Dad may have had a hard time sharing his feelings but I know in my heart that he loved me and was proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish thus far in my life.

I’m over 70 miles for the month of August and just 7 races away from completing the 30 races I’ve set out to run.  I know I’ll get it done… my Dad told me so and I won’t let him down.  I’ll continue to have my chats with him on the open road.  We all know that’s where I find my serenity.  Strength, drive, passion…yeah…that’s my Father.

For my friends at Mobile Meals of Toledo…I’ve got your back!  I’ll get this done and continue to raise awareness of the many needs you folks have.  To those that are fighting and surviving cancer…I’ve got your back as well!  I’ll carry you on my skin, on my clothing and in my heart. For you Dad… I’ll never quit!

See you on the road…

Training, Racing, Planning and looking towards #30

Sorry for the long delay!  There have been several events going on in my life and of course work just loves to suck the life out of me!  Training has been going very well!  I’ve been maintaining my once a week-long run and an assortment of distances throughout the week.

July 2nd was the Woodville 4th of July celebration 5K!  Although I worked during the day, I managed to hold onto enough energy to get through the 5K and also managed to stay in my wheel house on time. (24:19) was my Garmin time!  I’m finding comfort in the mid to lower 24’s for 5K’s these days and enjoying that!  My best was at the National Running Day run at a full minute below that!  23:19 was Garmin time for that one!  I’ll try to muster a lower time somewhere along the way but again, I’m more focused on the long haul and getting all 30 races done!

team zombieThe Woodville race was a lot of fun!  Beautiful sunshine and moderate temperatures helped to make the run quite special!  That along with the fact just a few days earlier, Woodville suffered a huge flood putting the entire set up (tents and all) under water!  6 plus inches of water hit our entire area and caused major flooding issues everywhere!  That being said, Woodville pulled off an excellent celebration in spite of Mother Nature’s smack!  Way to go Woodville…I’ll be back next year in my Pink socks to run that one again!

During this week I was able to get an address for our Pink Warrior Valory Newton!  I mailed a Run Zombie Run tank top to her so that she could feel the love that we Zombies have for her and know that we’re carrying her on every run!  Keep Fighting Valory!

Friends Tom and Dianna rock the limited edition "Run Zombie Run" tanks.

Friends Tom and Dianna rock the limited edition “Run Zombie Run” tanks.

I also managed to get a few tanks out to just a few running friends!  Don’t feel slighted if you didn’t get one…there will be a huge Long sleeved T-shirt event as we get closer to the magic #30 race!  Stay tuned on that one!  Anyway…I only had 20 of the tank tops and decided to switch the lettering to Pink in honor of all those fighting or surviving Cancer!  I called this my limited edition tank and added TeamValory on the back just below my Mobile Meals logo!  I’m so happy when I see these tanks on people and the smiles they have wearing them!  Thanks runners for helping me keep this show going!

As I’ve said before…I don’t have the exact date set yet for the 30th race.  I’m guessing by what I have (kind of) planned that it should hit somewhere in the late October or Early November time!  Fall is my most favorite time of year and I can’t tell you how awesome it feels knowing that I just might hit this 30 races target!  I’m forever thinking about when this started, how it started and how absolutely grateful I am for all the help and support I’ve received to make it just this far!  From the people who keep me held together physically…Becky at Massage Works…Doctor Odeh at Genoa Medical center, my lovely bride Karla Neeley…they’ve all been a huge part of my success!  Then there are all of you!  The ones that follow me on here and Facebook.  The wonderful people who believe in what I’m doing and have donated so much to Mobile Meals!  I just can’t believe how well this is going!  I promise to keep this going and never disappoint you!

I’ll get back with you after this Thursday’s race in Sylvania.  (The Ohio/Michigan 8K) I’ll post up my thoughts about the race, how I felt, my time and of course some pictures before and after!  More to come this month!  A couple of back to back runs in late July and then rolling right into a busy August!  This Summer is flying!

Be well my friends!  Keep moving and enjoying the sunshine!  Keep Valory in your thoughts and prayers!  We want her healthy and happy!  Keep following the Zombie and I’ll…See you on the road!

Vacation in the south and back at it!

Sorry for the delay in getting something on the blog.  We took a family trip to South Carolina last week to get my daughter’s senior pictures done by a good friend and of course to visit the ocean/beaches and such!  The weather was crazy hot but sunshine every day!  Average temp was around 95 and the humidity…well, “forget about it!”  All my running was designated to pre-dawn when the temp was a low 82-84 degrees and about 87% humidity!

bridgebridge2The highlight of the vacation (as far as running goes) was to take on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge…also known as the Cooper River bridge.  This thing is 2.5 miles in length and is one of the most beautiful suspension bridges in the country!  The first challenge was to run from one side to the other (5 miles).  Karla and I handled it and got back to our cottage and started talking about the run.  We decided that we needed a bit more of a challenge.  My idea…”Run the damn thing twice!”  We returned after a day off and wow!  The heat was crazy, we got to our parking spot later than expected due to road construction and on the second go around…the sun was up and cooking!  By mile 8 my feet were so wet from sweat that my shoes were leaving footprints on the pavement!  I know…gross!  Sweat footprints!  The views from the bridge and the excitement of being on a bridge of this size carried me through the 10 miles!  A killed almost a full 32 oz. Gatorade and a Core protein shake right after the run.  Karla was so depleted that she was almost in a daze!  We were very proud to have finished what we set out to do!  Bring on the next bridge!!mike and karla on bridge

The beauty of South Carolina can be intoxicating.  So much to see and things are so well-preserved.  We went into Charleston and signed up for a Ghost and Graveyard walking tour!  Old graveyards from the 1700’s, stories of everything that went on in the streets there was something we really looked forward to.  We got into the downtown area a little early and walked the neighborhoods to look at the old historic homes.  Stunning is a good way to put it!  The tour started at 9:30 p.m. and we began wandering the streets and learning about the past.  A short time later I noticed helicopters flying about with spot lights.  I told Karla that they were Police choppers and with the spot lights on they had to be looking for someone.  I became very uneasy and the Eastside kid inside of me said there was danger about.  As soon as the tour concluded we headed back to the parking garage.  Karla looked on-line to see if there was something going on in the area.  I’m sure you all are aware now of the unspeakable horror that unfolded in the church there.  Getting out of the downtown area was a little tough as there were police everywhere and much of the area was blocked off.  We didn’t find out until the next morning what had happened and it left Karla and I very sad and out of sorts.

We made one more stop in the down town area before leaving and hoped to leave with better feelings about South Carolina.  I tried to embrace the beauty of the area and believe that things would improve.  It also made me reflect that my time on earth is never guaranteed and I need to live in the moment!  We returned to the beach and remained in the Folly Beach area until departing.  For those wondering, Folly Beach is an amazing area to visit!  Very small feel and not over commercialized!  Super Pet friendly…in fact they allow dogs to walk on the beach each morning from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. with their owners to enjoy the scenery.  There is a small café called Lost Dog that I highly recommend visiting if you go there!  They serve Breakfast and lunch and then close for the day to relax!  The owner is originally from Ohio!  Yay!!

I kept up with the training during my vacation but did not schedule any formal races.  I’ll be right back at it this Saturday 6/27/15 at 8:30 a.m. at Swan Creek Metro Park for the Humane Hustle 5K!  All proceeds benefit the Humane Society!  We all love our animals!  I have quite a few races on tap for July!  July 2nd I’ll be in Woodville Ohio for the 4th of July celebration 5K!  It’s a night race 7:30 p.m. start.  Then it’ll be the Ohio/Michigan 8K on July 9th.  This will also be a night run!  Later in the month will be the Shawshanke Hustle in Mansfield Ohio at the old prison!  The following day will be Where’s the Dam trail 1/4 and 1/2 marathon in Grand Rapids Ohio!  I may throw another race or two in there and that will pack July!  With other races on my radar, I’m pretty sure I’ll reach 30 races by October.  That could change..so stay tuned!

Big message today…Live everyday to the fullest!  Tomorrow is promised to no one!  Live and Love those around you please!  We all need to take stock in those that mean something in our lives.  Now get out there and get moving!  I’ll see you on the road!

Running in the mid year!

I was spending some time today going over races for the upcoming months.  For those that didn’t know, I set up the races on a month to month basis due to my work schedule.  It can be a little hectic at times but for the most part, it all works out.

The month of June started out with National Running Day!  (June 3rd)  The weather was beautiful and the setting was International Park down on the river front.  I haven’t been down that way in years so was a bit surprised at what a fun course they mapped out for the run.  I was able to enjoy the 5K run with my wife Karla and my sister Patti…not to mention the many running friends from the Toledo Roadrunners!!  Love that group!  Had some Pink Compression socks on and a Pink Under Armour shirt under my Run Zombie Run top!  Showing support for the many in my life that are fighting cancer.  I placed “Team Valory” on my arm to honor and dedicate my race miles to a beautiful 9 year old girl by the name of Valory Newton.  You can find her on Facebook at Valory Fighting Dancer!  I was so inspired by this young lady that I put down a PR on this 5K course of 23:19!  I showed 23:16 on my Garmin…but close enough!  I can’t put into words how excited I was to have run so well and felt so good!  I say it was because of Valory and the Pink clothing!  I’ll be wearing more Pink throughout the remaining races this year!

Now today (Saturday 6/6/15) was a scheduled longer run with my sister.  We made plans to go out after I was “released” from work!  10+ hour days at work make me so tired and running was not the first thing on my mind to be honest.  My sister was waiting with her running shoes on…how can you say no to that?!!  Got on the running gear and out we went!  Perfect…and I do mean perfect evening for a run!  69-70 degrees, cool breeze blowing and sunshine for days!  My sister kept remarking on how beautiful everything looked!  The trees, grass, fields, homes, everything just seemed to be right in the world tonight!  Ran a nice 7 miles and home now for a bit of relax time.

July looks to be a little busier on the race schedule.  I’ll be in Woodville Ohio for the 4th of July celebration run on July 2nd! This will be an evening run and looks to be an excellent route for a 5K.  The Ohio/Michigan 8K run will also be on my schedule!  This will be an evening run also and falls on July 9th with a start time of 7 p.m.  I’ll be heading out of town for the Shawshank Hustle on July 25th at the old Mansfield prison!  There will be some 3,000 runners at this one so should be big fun!  The following day will be the Where’s the Dam trail 1/4 and 1/2 marathons!  This will be in Grand Rapids, Ohio.  This starts at 8 a.m. at Bluebell Island park.  I may throw another race in during June but with vacation to South Carolina in there, I don’t want to overbook.  18 Races down and I have quite a few on the books right now!  God willing I’ll sail right on by 30 races!  I will put some thought into scheduling something local and hopefully 1/2 marathon in size for my 30th race!  Need to make a big splash with that when it comes around!

Keep following and keep sharing the Run Zombie Run pages!  The more people talk about it, the better things will get for Mobile Meals and the many that they serve!  As always, any donations made go directly to Mobile Meals and are tax deductible.  No monies ever come to me for anything!  I do this because I love it and because it’s the right thing to do.  Now get out there and enjoy the start of what will be an amazing Summer!  I’ll see you on the road.

Running for others

While I always go out and enjoy each and every run, I feel even better (before, during and after) when there’s purpose!  I’ve found that my celebration of the 30 years I’ve been running has been one of the most fulfilling times in my life thus far!  I teamed up with Mobile Meals of Toledo to raise funds and awareness of hunger and the need to help feed those in need.  Along with this, I’ve had numerous people in my life come upon hard times.  Sickness and health issues seem to be hitting many that I care for.  While I’m unable to assist in their recovery first hand, I can bring attention, show compassion and care for them as a person.  I can let them know that they matter and that others think of them.

I’ll be running for a 9-year-old little girl this weekend and probably for several other races.  Valory Newton is fighting bone cancer at this time.  She’s lost a leg but continues to be a positive and loving little girl.  I want nothing more than for her to be able to feel better and live the life that so many of us enjoy.  My sister Gini Feller shared her story with me and asked that I dedicate some miles to her.  I will do so with great honor!  I’ll throw some pink into my wardrobe, place her name upon my arm and carry her as far as I possibly can!  Thank you so much Gini for bringing this to my attention and for asking me to share in her recovery.  Again, I’m honored.

Valory…I want you to focus on getting well!  I want you to stay strong and overcome this illness that’s come into your body.  I also want you to know that I care!  I want you to be able to dance again one day soon!

For those of you out there that run or walk, dedicate some miles to this beautiful little girl.  Visit her Facebook page:  Valory Fighting Dancer.  I think you’ll agree, she’s worth our attention!  I look forward to running this Sunday and just know that by having this young lady’s name on my arm I’ll run well!  I continue to run with purpose!  I will also continue to run for others!  My message today is simple…look beyond yourself, think of Valory, think of my friend Ann who continues her journey to become healthy again.  They need us and it’s our duty to help!

So get out there and run for others and I’ll see you on the road!

Such a perfect day!

Having to work until the wee hours of the morning can be a challenge when it comes time to roll out of bed for an early morning race.  This morning was one of those days.  I woke after about 4 1/2 hours of sleep to the most beautiful morning!  Cool temperatures, soft breeze, sun climbing up in the sky and a 5 mile race waiting for me in Bowling Green, Ohio!  A quick protein shake and a bit of caffeine!  Off we went!

mike_may 24The Falcon Five Miler was an excellent run!  The course was on the campus of Bowing Green State University and again, the day was picture perfect.  I was hoping to run the 5 miles in around 42 minutes.  My wife Karla and my sister Patti and I all discussed what we were hoping for and how amazing the day was.

The end result was finishing an amazing 39:51 for the 5 miles!  I was blowing through the miles and just felt…well…wonderful!  Karla took first place in her age group and Patti was just behind her to scoop up second place!  I took the 2nd spot for my age group and was just pleased as punch!

We left for home and again were discussing how we enjoyed the race and how perfect the day was!  Came home, enjoyed some outdoor time both sunning and working in the yard.  Days like this, I just never want to be inside the house!  After a nice shower, Karla and I sat on our patio and just enjoyed the day!  I truly believe that everything seems a bit brighter when you’re an athlete.  An athlete of any kind and no matter what the level.  There’s something special about everything you see and do.  Some people would think that getting up on short sleep and running 5 miles is just crazy!  Me, it’s just perfect!

Enjoy this beautiful Ohio Weekend!  Do something fun and/or special!  Go to the park, take a walk around the neighborhood, visit with family or dare I say it…go for a run!!

I’ll see you on the road!
